  • Pelosi gives Trump early Christmas

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 24, 2019

When news first started seeping out that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were thinking about impeaching President Trump over his so-called quid pro quo with the Ukrainian president about holding up U.S. military aid unless Ukraine investigated and exposed Joe Biden for illegal activity, I wrote a column saying Trump probably wanted to be impeached. I talked about the old story of Brer Rabbit who acted like he didn't want to be thrown into the brier patch and even begged not to be tossed. But...

  • Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

    Staff Report|Dec 24, 2019

Editor’s note: Christmas is a time to reflect on all the hopes and fears around the world. Years ago an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper saying her friends had told her there was no Santa Claus. The response, written by Francis P. Church and appearing on the Sun’s editorial page on Sept. 21, 1897, remains as appropriate today as it did those many years ago. In wishing you a Merry Christmas, The Tri-City Ledger shares this memorable letter with you. ***** We take pleasure in an...

  • Alabama lost great people in 2019

    Steve Flowers, Guest writer|Dec 24, 2019

As is my tradition, as the old year comes to a close, I like to pay homage to legendary Alabama leaders who have passed away. We lost some legends in 2019. Although he was a nonpolitical leader, Bart Starr passed away this year at 85. Starr was best known for being the quarterback of the great Green Bay Packers teams that won the NFL Championship perennially. Starr was the leader of Coach Vince Lombardo’s dynasty teams. Starr died during Memorial Day weekend in Birmingham. He left an indelible legacy that was vast and greater than just being a...

  • The 'Merry' is back but what about Christmas?

    Pete Riehm, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

The recent years’ assault on Christmas seems to have stalled. Americans have been doggedly fighting back against yuletide political correctness and President Trump jovially declared it’s safe to wish everyone a “Merry Christmas” again. So liberated from atheist angst and liberal disapproval and even threats, Americans are making Christmas merry again! The liberal intelligentsia tried to coerce us into saying a benign “Happy Holidays” so as not to offend other religions or non-believers. Funny how Christians are demanded to show deference t...

  • Remembering 56 years ago

    Earline Smith Crews, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

11 years ago, on December 28th, we two innocents stood before Judge Jean Kirkland in the courthouse in Brewton, Alabama and vowed to love, honor and obey (ouch) each other until death and taxes came due. All he owned was a car and the monthly payment. Together we owned only our names and trust in each other and have tried really hard to keep them both good. So, with $500.00 dollars we head over to New Orleans (a.k.a. ‘Sin City’) to share a "lavish" two-day honeymoon. We were due back really soon to continue our factory jobs at Escambia Che...

  • Family life in Little Escambia

    Kevin McKinley, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

Along Pecan Lane a series of old wood frame houses provide a historical context among the modern brick homes and Flomaton Speedway. Prior to the coming of Highway 113 this street was called Sardine Road and the community was known as Little Escambia. In the years before the Flomaton Speedway appeared a road ran parallel to the current highway. Some residents of the area wanted to call the community North Flomaton but the name Little Escambia became affixed to this quite roadside community which...

  • Christmas party at Alger Sullivan

    Russell Brown, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

Hello dear readers. In this note I take the role of one of our society’s past leaders who was well known for her weekly greetings and current news, in order to report on a special event. The meeting began with the customary opening ceremony of pledges and prayers, and then a short welcome by Mr. Fischer which was followed by games, stories and songs. Diane and Agnes spent a large portion o...

    Dr. J. Daniel Raulerson, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

12: Year End Review: At this time of the year, everyone seems to have a little time to take a breath and think back upon all of the moments that impacted them over the past year. • The Sunshine Report

    Lou Vickery, Guest Writer|Dec 24, 2019

The letter in Ruth’s mailbox was unusual to say the least. There was no stamp on it and no return address. Immediately upon entering the door to her home, Ruth began to open the letter. The letter read: Dear Ruth: I will be stopping by for dinner tonight. I look forward to dining with you. Love, Jesus Is this some kind of hoax, she thought? Then again, what if it is true? For certain the letter had arrived with no stamp. “I will be prepared just in case he does show up,” she spoke out loud to herself. With that thought, Ruth remembered her empt...
