Pelosi gives Trump early Christmas

When news first started seeping out that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were thinking about impeaching President Trump over his so-called quid pro quo with the Ukrainian president about holding up U.S. military aid unless Ukraine investigated and exposed Joe Biden for illegal activity, I wrote a column saying Trump probably wanted to be impeached.

I talked about the old story of Brer Rabbit who acted like he didn't want to be thrown into the brier patch and even begged not to be tossed. But Brer Rabbit really wanted to be thrown into the patch because he knew that was his only way to escape.

As the story is told, Brer Rabbit got thrown into the brier patch and escaped with no problem.

There are a bunch of sayings about letting sleeping dogs lie, waking up a sleeping bear and of course Japan's decision to 'wake up a sleeping giant' when it bombed Pearl Harbor.

Trump acted like he didn't want to be impeached and now he's acting upset that the Democratically-controlled House of Representatives has actually passed two articles of impeachment.

But deep down, my bet is Trump is feeling a lot like Brer Rabbit.

He knows the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate is not going to kick him out of office. He also knows his core base that helped elect him in 2016 is mad at the Democrats and will rally strong and hard to re-elect him in 2020.

The Democrats wanted impeachment and they got it. Be careful what you wish for because it just might come true.

I'm not a big believer in polls because there are so many polls out there that come up with different numbers. I remember all the polls on the eve of the 2016 General Election that showed Hillary Clinton was going to be the next U.S. president. I think Trump believed those polls because he immediately began slamming the Electoral College and claiming the election had been rigged. Trump praised the Electoral College when the dust finally settled and showed Clinton winning the popular vote but Trump winning the election through the Electoral College.

But if you put stock in polls, I've seen Trump's numbers increase since the Democrats launched their impeachment campaign and they took another jump when he was actually impeached.

In most all elections, especially General Elections, most of the candidates have enough 'supporters' to win the race. But the difference between winning and losing comes down to which candidate can get their supporters to the polls on Election Day.

One candidate may have 10,000 people who support him while the other only has 5,000. Polls will tell us the candidate with 10,000 supporters will win. But on Election Day when only 4,500 of those supporters vote and all 5,000 of the other candidate's supporters vote, the 5,000 man wins.

Over the years I've seen candidates lose because many of their supporters felt he or she had it wrapped up and didn't go to the polls.

Alabama elected Democrat Doug Jones to the U.S. Senate because Democrats went to the polls and many Republicans stayed home because they couldn't stomach casting a ballot for Roy Moore.

What this impeachment has done is not only solidify Trump's core support, it has rallied them. They're mad and they will go to the polls in November, 2020, to take their frustration out on the Democratic nominee – who I expect will be Biden.

Without the impeachment, I felt Trump could possibly be in trouble in 2020. I've changed my tune and I'll now be shocked if he doesn't get re-elected.

Trump needs to send Pelosi a thank you card for the very special Christmas gift she gave him.
