  • Learn from past to make better future

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Jan 3, 2019

It’s the beginning of a new year. Lately, all over social media, different memes and posts have been shared hundreds of times pointing out that the beginning of a new year is a lot like having a new book to write. 365 blank pages to try and make into a new special year filled with goodness and not repeating the mistakes of our pasts. What I want to point out, is that it is wonderful to have lofty goals to be a better person and to hope to have a better year than the previous one, but we c...

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Dec 27, 2018

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the room, all the children from FES brightened the gloom. Preschoolers through third grade presented their songs, while parents in attendance sometimes clapped along. The auditorium was packed, to this, just be sure, one would have thought the Beatles were...

  • Politicians can learn from football

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Dec 13, 2018

Charles Dickens’ ‘A Tale of Two Cities” is sadly forgotten in the modern American political system. Instead we now face ‘A tale of two parties’. In Dickens’ book, the horror of living during the French Revolution is brought to life and the unspeakable conditions of the Reign of Terror are meant to warn other countries of the dangers of tyrannical rule. We, as Americans, have missed the point. What we have come to as a nation is that our two-party system (and let’s face it, that is exactly what i...

  • Veterans deserve more than we provide

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Nov 15, 2018

Veteran’s Day has always held a special place for me. Now I admit, when I was younger, it was special because well, it’s my birthday. As a kid I remember how jealous my friends would be that I was always out of school on my birthday so birthday parties never interfered with that pesky and consistent schooling that we all had to contend with on a perpetual basis. It never occurred to me in my younger years that the world did not, in fact, revolve around me and my birthday. It was as I aged and...

  • Life doesn't have a speed limit

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Aug 30, 2018

It is mindboggling how quickly life can change. I’ve always heard the phrase “the speed of life”, but honestly never really gave it much thought. Working at the newspaper will teach one just how quickly life can happen. One moment a family of four can be riding down the highway for a weekend excursion and the next moment three are dead from a head-on vehicle collision while the fourth battles for their life in the ICU of a local hospital. Blink. Life happens. Blink again. Another moment that...

  • It's time to head to the football field

    Stephanie Cunningham, Ledger Staff|Aug 23, 2018

Its here. It is finally that time of year again. Fall? You ask? Well in a way, but only because it signals the time of year for the best season of all: football season in the south. There is just something about those Friday night lights around a football field with the smell of concession stand hamburgers filling the air that gets a southern gal’s heart pumping. The sound of the drumline joined by blaring horns and tuba’s is enough to make any distracted bystander suddenly feel excited for the...
