Thank you for the opportunity to be a guest columnist with the Tri-City Ledger.
I was asked to take this on now that Ms. Carolyn Bivins, Alabama Cooperative Extension System Regional Extension Agent, is retired after 45 years of service to Escambia County and the surrounding counties.
Ms. Carolyn was a blessing to our region and she has more than earned the time to invest in whatever projects and opportunities that she wants to pursue.
As a guest columnist, I will be bringing some information and articles about what 4-H is doing here locally and some opportunities for youth to be engaged with Alabama 4-H programs here in Escambia County.
I will also be bringing other opportunities for adults to take part in trainings or services provided by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
Alabama Extension is set up as a regional system, so there are so many more resources and opportunities available than you probably know about from the Regional Extension Agents that serve Escambia County.
Some programs are hosted at our Escambia County Extension Office, some are hosted at Extension Offices in other counties in our region, while other opportunities are hosted online so that you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home to learn a little something that could help you.
About me: My name is Dr. Kelly Rexroat and I am the Alabama 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent serving Escambia County, AL. I am based at the Escambia County Extension Office in Brewton, AL.
My family and I moved to Escambia County from Lexington, KY in March 2017. I just celebrated my 10-year wedding anniversary to my wonderful wife Sarah and am the proud father of Catie, Chloe, and Charlotte and we are expecting girl no. 4 in February 2020.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Education from University of Kentucky in December 2008 and began working in January 2009 as a Fayette County 4-H Youth Development Program Assistant.
I earned my Master of Science in Human Development & Leadership from Murray State University in May 2014 and earned my Doctorate of Education in P-20 Education and Community Leadership from Murray State University in December 2018.
Upcoming opportunities:
• 4-H Archery Club: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Brewton Middle School gym. We provide equipment, so come join us!
• Swine Program: we will have a Swine Program Registration Meeting the first week of November. Contact our office for more information or check back here next week for updated information.
• Tractor Supply 4-H Paper Clover Campaign: make sure to visit Tractor Supply Company on Douglas Avenue in Brewton to purchase a paper clover and 90percent comes back to use to support leadership programs and camp opportunities for local youth.
• Chick Chain Show & Sale will be November 2 at the LaRae Harvest Festival in Dixonville, AL. Show will start at 9am and the Presentation of Awards and Auction will start at 11am.
