Fountain is named to council position

Will fill Reardon's term in Flomaton

On the recommendation of Flomaton Mayor Jim Johnson, the Flomaton Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Susan Fountain to fill the unexpired term of Charlie Reardon's unexpired District 1 council seat, which runs until 2025.

Reardon, 81, resigned his position on the council about two weeks ago. During Monday morning's town council meeting, Mayor Johnson recommended naming Fountain to fill the seat. After the council voted to declare the seat vacant, Councilman Roger Adkinson made the motion to name Fountain to the seat and the motion received a second from Councilwoman Lillian Dean. The council then voted 6-0 to name Fountain to that seat. She will be sworn in at the council's next council meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12.

Fountain moved to Flomaton in 1977 and is a 1984 graduate of Flomaton High School. She graduated from Troy State University with an education degree and taught 26 years, mostly in Troy, with the last four years in Atmore.

She said she met her husband Hugh Fountain on a blind date while in high school and the two were married in 1985 and have three children, Hannah, 28, H.T., 26 and Troy, 22.

Fountain moved back to Flomaton in 2012 when her husband was named head football coach at Escambia Academy. He currently serves as head football coach at W.S. Neal High School.

Fountain retired from teaching in 2016 and became manager of Barrow Furniture in Flomaton, a position she still holds. Fountain is also president of the Flomaton Area Chamber of Commerce.

She said Reardon first contacted her about filling his seat on the council.

"It's an honor that someone would put me in that position," Fountain said. "I want to represent the people in my district and all of Flomaton, to help the town grow."

"I think highly of Mr. Reardon," Fountain added. "He represented us all well and I hope to continue to do what's best for the town of Flomaton."

Reardon said he felt the council made the right decision and was glad Fountain agreed to fill the seat.

"I think it's a good choice," Reardon said. "She's level headed and has a good business sense. I feel she will be good for the town."

"She's been committed to this town for many, many years," Reardon added.
