Atmore man is jailed for arson

Accused of setting fire at same house twice

An Atmore man was arrested on two counts of arson II after being accused to intentionally setting fire to a vacant residence on two separate occasions.

John Edward Norwood, 38, 165 West Road, was arrested June 22 by Atmore police and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center. On June 23, District Judge Eric Coale set Norwood's bond at $250,000.

According to reports from the Atmore Police Department, the Atmore Fire Department and Atmore police responded to a structure fire about 5:50 p.m. on June 20 at 165 South Road. Witnesses said the fire at the vacant residence was extinguished and Norwood was identified as a suspect.

About 7:15 a.m. on June 22, the fire department and police were dispatched again to 165 South Road in reference to a structure fire.

Police said witness accounts placed Norwood on the property at the time the fire started. Officers set up a perimeter and Norwood was taken into custody a short time later and transported to the detention center in Brewton.

Court records state Norwood had 'no possessory or proprietary' interest in the building, which was valued at $60,300.
