Atmore man, Jay woman killed in crash

The two were involved in a multiple-vehicle crash on I-65 at Creola

An Atmore man and a Jay woman lost their lives in a multi-car crash on Interstate 65 near the Creola city limits on Wednesday, July 20, around 12:45 p.m.

Brittney Talbot, 37, of Jay was driving a 2001 Honda Civic southbound with passenger Christopher Knighten, 38, of Atmore, when her Civic was struck by a 2021 Dodge Ram, driven by David R. Mayfield, 35, of Springville, according to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency report.

Talbot’s vehicle then crossed the median into the into the northbound lanes of traffic and struck a 2021 Ford F-150 driven be Jesse M. Reed, 55, of Bay Minette and a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by Timothy M. Ratliff, 38, of Mount Olive.

Talbot and Knighten were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash according to the report. Both were pronounced dead on the scene. The crash happened near the 20 mile marker on Interstate 65. Nothing further is available as ALEA continues to investigate the crash.

I-65 closed

A one-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. involving a box truck had both lanes of Interstate 65 southbound at the 54 mile marker in Escambia County, Ala. closed for about 5 hours. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) were on scene investigating.

Around 8:30 p.m., Tuesday night, ALEA sent out an update that the left southbound lane was open. There was no further information as of press time.
