Two out, council still votes on officers

At Century's council meeting last Monday, the positions of council president and vice president were decided by the three of five council members in attendance.

Councilman Ben Boutwell nominated Councilwoman Ann Brooks for president. There were no other nominations made.

Brooks won in a vote of two to one, with Councilwoman Sandra McMurray Jackson voting no.

Jackson nominated Boutwell as vice president. All three members voted yes.

Brooks remains president of the council and Boutwell will remain vice president.

Fence ordinance

The council voted to approve the second reading of an ordinance that lowered the height of fences in the side and rear yards in the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company Residential Historic District from 8 feet to 6 feet.

Initially, there was verbage in the first ordinance that stated the fence height reduction did not specifically apply to the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company Residential Historic District. Complaints by Century residents brought the error to the attention of Town Planner Debbie Nickles. The approved ordinance clearly states the reduction applies to said historic district.

Mayor’s Report

At 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, Congressman Matt Gaetz is scheduled to meet with the Century Council at Century Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
