Wrong way driver crashes vehicle

Hits guardrail heading south in north lane

An investigation continues in a Saturday crash where a Flomaton woman was traveling south in the northbound lane of Highway 31 before crashing into a guardrail.

Jaumelle Avain Ward, 25, was transported from the scene by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton with minor injuries.

According to police reports, Ward was driving south in the northbound lane in a 2015 Ford Fiesta about 12 noon when the crash occurred. The report noted the vehicle was totaled.

Witnesses said they observed Ward traveling in the wrong lane just past Hart Farm Road. After she hit the guardrail she exited the vehicle and began running around.

Officials could not determine where Ward crossed from the southbound land to the northbound lane but other witnesses said she hit the guardrail after meeting traffic heading her way.

Ward told police she was taking medication and was uncertain what happened. The report also noted she appeared to be disoriented.

Flomaton Police Chief Bryan Davis said it's lucky nobody was seriously hurt or killed.

It marks the second time in the past few months someone crashed on Highway 31 near Flomaton driving in the wrong direction.
