Century seeking tower

Cell tower increases service and revenue

The town of Century will receive $270,000 over the next 25 years if Verizon installs a cell phone tower locally, a request from the company Century Mayor Henry Hawkins presented to the council Monday night.

Mayor Hawkins said that the company will pay $800 a month for 25 years to place a tower in the town. The next step the town is to plan a meeting with Verizon representatives and determine where the tower will go, following the approval.

The company inquired about the east side of the lumber mill but town consultant Debbie Nickles suggested the south side of the water treatment facility building may be the best spot because it is easily accessible and the company's maintenance will not interfere with the water treatment facility's normal activity.

Hawkins noted to the council several advantages to having the cell tower in Century, besides the income.

“The tower's presence here will certainly increase our signal,” said Hawkins. “We're going to ask them about getting some free service for the town. It will be more money in the kitty to pay bills, and help us do what we need to do.”

In a motion made by Councilman Ben Boutwell and seconded by Councilwoman Sandra McMurray Jackson, the council voted approval.
