Century man jailed for home invasion

Previously jailed on felony drug charges, Washington accused of using gun in robbery

A Century man is back behind bars and facing a felony home invasion charge as the result of an investigation by Escambia County (Fla.) law enforcement that began Jan. 21, 2018.

Kendrick Washington, 29, 6711 Jefferson Ave., was arrested and charged with one count felony home invasion robbery with a firearm Saturday, Feb. 10, when he was identified by Britni Smith, a resident of 9520 Ivey St. in Century, as the person who had unlawfully forced his way into her home on Sunday, Jan. 21, demanding money and drugs and pointing a gun in her face, according to a Sheriff's office report. Washington was arrested by Escambia County (Fla.) law enforcement on Nov. 16, 2017 with felony drug charges and jailed.

Smith told police she opened her door to let a subject she knew in and shortly after, another subject knocked but she did not know him and tried to close the door. The report stated that the second subject forced his way in and pulled a gun from his pocket, demanding money and drugs. Smith told authorities she had $1,500 in her purse because she had just cashed her check and had not gone to the bank. Smith said the suspect took the money and some unknown quantity of drugs located in the living room and ran out of her residence in an unknown direction with the first subject.

Smith later identified Washington as the suspect because she had seen him between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. wearing the dark hoodie and camo pants, although the person who robbed her wore a dark colored towel of scarf around his face, the report said.

Investigators from Escambia County counties in Florida and Alabama worked with Poarch Tribal Police after an anonymous phone call led them to the whereabouts of the first subject Smith had let in her home on Jan. 21.

Once the first subject was located, he told investigators on Feb. 20, he was in Century and saw Washington, and spoke to him briefly about money and a party at 111 Henry St. The suspect told police he saw Washington later that night in the early morning hours of Jan. 21, the report said.

Due to Smith's identification of Washington as the perpetrator, a warrant was issued. Washington was arrested, transported to Escambia County Jail and given no bond.
