BOE moves to expel student

The Escambia County (Ala.) Board of Education voted at a special board meeting Monday, Feb. 5. to expel a Flomaton High School junior who had a hunting rifle and compound bow in his vehicle.

Following an Executive Session, the board announced the decision to expel the student for one year from the date of the incident, Jan. 30, 2018 to Jan. 30, 2019.

The weapons were noticed by the school's resource officer during a security check of the parking lot and removed from the vehicle. The student's parent were contacted. No criminal charges were filed.

The school's code of conduct states the punishment for having a weapon on school grounds is expulsion.

“We went by our school board policy,” said Escambia County School Superintendent John Knott. “It requires a one-year expulsion though it can be modified with a recommendation through the superintendent.”
