Property taxes are now delinquent

As of Tuesday afternoon, Escambia County (Ala.) Tax Collector Tim Pettis' office had collected $13,618,701.49 of the $16,592,086.55 that was billed out but Pettis said more money will be added to the total before late fees are added.

Property taxes were due by Jan. 1, but with Dec. 31 falling on Sunday and Jan. 1 being a holiday, Jan. 2 became the official day to pay taxes without a penalty.

Pettis said he probably had another $400,000 in the mail Tuesday that had not been added to the total.

He noted any tax payments mailed that were postmarked on or before Jan. 2 will be considered as paid.

Taxes not paid by the deadline will face a 3 percent penalty until the end of February.

Pettis said in March, his office will send certified letters to those who have not paid their property taxes. In addition to the 3 percent penalty, other fees will be attached.

Property owners then have until the end of April to pay their taxes. Any parcel with unpaid taxes will then be advertised for sale, which will be held on the courthouse steps in May.
