Postal delivery ends in arrest of Century man

Package contained 3,175.3 grams of pot

A Century man is facing two counts of felony drug charges after law enforcement intercepted a postal package under surveillance containing a controlled substance was delivered and later picked up by the suspect.

Kendrick Jamar Washington, 29, 6711 Jefferson Ave., was arrested and charged Nov. 16 with one count felony marijuana possession with intent to sell and one count felony possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute as he was leaving a Pensacola residence with a United Parcel Service package containing 3,175.3 grams of marijuana, according to an Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office report.

The report stated law enforcement conducted a controlled delivery of a UPS package under surveillance to a residence at 3095 Pine Forest Road which was brought into the residence. A short while later, a silver colored Lincoln SUV arrived and the suspect, later identified as Washington, arrived and entered the residence.

After a few minutes, the suspect exited the residence carrying the package and placed it in the rear seat of the vehicle before he got into the driver's seat, according to the report. The suspect backed out of the driveway and began to drive forward and was immediately stopped for a seatbelt violation.

The report stated the officer identified the smell of burnt marijuana as he approached the driver's side which prompted him to remove the suspect and the passenger, later identified as Latiffa Rich.

The unopened package was removed from the back seat. The report said the package had the word "Return" written on the side, a known method narcotics violators use to deceive law enforcement until the package reaches its intended location, according to the report.

Once the package was removed from the vehicle, the vehicle was left alone for 10 minutes at which time a K-9 unit alerted positively on the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a plastic baggie which contained marijuana, two individual baggies of marijuana and two and a half Ecstasy pills in the center console, the report said.

The marijuana was packaged consistent with the selling of marijuana. The pills were also consistent with that of sale because the pill is often cut into halves for distribution. Also located in the center console was approximately $1,432, according to the report.

Washington was charged with the marijuana and Ecstasy located in the vehicle and the vehicle was seized and taken to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office Evidence and impound lot, the report said.

Washington was arrested and transported to the Escambia County Jail and given a bond of $5,000 for each charge, a total of $10,000.
