Murder suspects indicted

Grand jury is called back to hear case against Brown and Booth

Escambia County (Ala.) District Attorney Steve Billy called a special grand jury this week that returned indictments against two men arrested about two weeks ago for an Aug. 7, 2017 home invasion that left on man dead and a woman injured.

Darrell Octavis Brown, 29, of Atmore and Deion Booth, 20, of Mobile, were indicted on two counts of capital murder (murder during a robbery and murder during a burglary), attempted murder, robbery I and burglary I. Both remain in jail without bond.

The two were arrested by Atmore police officers for the shooting death of Robert Kennedy of Atmore and the shooting of Joi McClammy of Flomaton.

When arrested on the new charges, Brown was already in the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton on capital murder charges for the April 26, 2017 murder of Donta Russell, who was shot inside his vehicle at 180 Martin Luther King Drive in Atmore.

Booth was housed in the Mobile Metro Jail on violation of probation charges when he was arrested for the new capital murder charges.

According to reports released by the Atmore Police Department in August, officers responded to 170 Broad St., in reference to two people being shot inside the home.

The report stated officers found Kennedy suffering from gunshot wounds and was transported by helicopter to U.S.A. Medical Center in Mobile where he was later pronounced dead.

McClammy was transported to Atmore Community Hospital with non life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The report also noted a juvenile involved in the home invasion was taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities.
