  • Cruz, not an AR-15, killed the children

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Feb 22, 2018

First of all it wasn't an AR-15 that killed 17 people and wounded 14 more at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last Wednesday, it was 19-year old Nicholas Cruz who killed those students and faculty members. Like other mass shootings, the gun control nuts come out of the woodwork and blame the gun and not the person pulling the trigger. I've listened to radio and television commentators and read several newspaper articles and there seems to be a theme that we need to ban...

  • The "Other" Duties of a Congressman

    Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|Feb 22, 2018

If someone asked you what a Congressman does on a daily basis, I can imagine what would come to your mind: voting on bills, attending committee hearings, holding meetings with others in Washington, and lots of time debating and arguing. Those are in fact major parts of the job, but there is so much more that goes into serving the people of Southwest Alabama. I want to highlight some of the “other” duties of a Member of Congress and explain how they might impact you. Before we get into that, some quick background information. There are 435 Congr...

  • Look for short and sweet session

    Steve Flowers|Feb 22, 2018

The 2018 legislative session will be short and sweet. It is an election year. Historically, during the last year of a quadrennium, the legislature convenes early and passes the budgets, then goes home and campaigns for reelection to another four year term. Our forefathers, who wrote our 1901 Constitution must have been thinking the same thing because they designed for the fourth year of the quadrennium legislative session to start and end early. It is set by law to begin in early January, whereas it begins in February in most years. This...

  • Grieve before you act

    Feb 22, 2018

Once again Americans are in shock after another horrific mass shooting. The depths of such a disaster defies description. We have become a largely cynical society, but our children are still considered innocent and invaluable. Any loss of life is tragic, but losing children to violent massacre makes the soul ache interminably. Looking at the beautiful enthusiastic faces of the youthful victims, one cannot imagine the staggering grief of the families. Even heartfelt condolences are inadequate, there’s really nothing to say to assuage the incredi...
