The old Jackson Theater built in 1926 in downtown Flomaton which later became the Flomaton Antique Auction will soon be owned by the town of Flomaton after the town council voted 4-1 with one abstention to take the building as a gift from Escambia County Bank. John Sansom approached the town council Monday night and requested the council agree to the bank's offer to give the building to the town. • I have faith in Griffin, health authority

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Feb 15, 2018

If you have ever dialed 911, like I have on at least two occasions, it seems like an eternity before an ambulance arrives because seconds become minutes in your mind. So, I understand the concerns people have as the Escambia County Health Care Authority wrestles with its decision on which direction to take in reference to ambulance service. This issue first became an issue when Escambia County (Fla.), which has an ambulance stationed in Century, said it was going to end its contract to serve...

  • Town helps to keep history

    Our View|Feb 15, 2018

Like Flomaton Councilman Buster Crapps, we had some reservations about the town taking ownership of the old Jackson Theater in downtown Flomaton. Our concerns were, like his, how much money will the town have to spend to keep the building up. But we also agree with Councilman Roger Adkinson who said the town could not afford to pass up the opportunity to hang on to a historical building that was given to the town free of charge. For years we've listened as Flomaton residents wished they had the old train depot back. It's long been destroyed....

  • Keeping Congress transparent

    Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|Feb 15, 2018

Last year, the country was shocked to learn terrible stories of sexual harassment taking place in the halls of Congress. The stories themselves were horrific, but even worse was the fact that some Members of Congress used taxpayer money to pay settlements. Prior to coming to Congress, I worked for thirty years as a labor and employment attorney in Alabama, so I have a background in these issues. I advised clients on how to prevent sexual harassment and how to navigate the process if a harassment claim was made. Quite frankly, I was shocked to...

  • Love 'ole time' capitol reporters

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|Feb 15, 2018

I have written about the legendary capitol reporters who use to cover Goat Hill. There was Bob Ingram of the Montgomery Advertiser, Al Fox of the Birmingham News, Hugh Sparrow of the Birmingham News, Rex Thomas of the Associated Press, Don Martin of UPI and Clarke Stallworth of the Birmingham Post Herald. A young cub reporter named Jim Bennett joined the Post Herald in 1961 and later had a distinguished career in Public Service. None of these legends is any longer with us. Today’s capitol press corps also works hard, they stick with “just the...

  • Memos; Oh, what to believe?

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|Feb 15, 2018

For more than a year Washington has been twisted in knots with all manner of allegations, intrigue at the highest levels, and subterfuge in the darkest shadows. Hounded with pernicious accusations of ostensible collusion with the Russians to steal the election, President Trump vehemently denies all. Instead, evidence is mounting that Trump is the victim of illicit but sanctioned spying and a concerted effort from the bowels of our bloated bureaucracy to undermine his nascent presidency. Incessant bickering and posturing make the pursuit of...
