Area is rallying to clean up county

Earth Week kicks off Saturday in Brewton

Earth Week activities will kickoff this Saturday at the E.O. Wilson Nature Adventure Park in Brewton and continue next week with a county-wide cleanup sponsored by the Escambia County Commission and Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS), along with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians holding a household hazardous wasted and electronics collection day on April 27.

The Earth Day Extravaganza at E.O. Wilson Park will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park located at 100 College Drive.

The event is designed as an environmental education day. Events will include representatives from Auburn University's Raptor Center, herpetologists with snakes and wildlife exhibitors from the Turtle Point Environmental Center.

There will also be a recycling demonstration by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and the Escambia County Cooperative Extension Agency will be on hand for a heritage seed exchange and plant swap.

Guided tours through the park will also be provided.

Earth Week

The Escambia County Commission will be sponsoring a week-long cleanup with dumpsters at various locations and free trash bags for individuals, groups or clubs wanting to help pick up trash along the highways.

Dumpsters will also be provided April 22 through April 27 at the Flomaton Fire Station; Boykin/Damascus; at the county shop on Pea Ridge Road, at the county shop on Jack Springs Road; and Springhill/Ridge Road. The dumpsters are for trash and debris only, no household garbage, electronics or tires.

Dumpsters will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for tires, electronics, light bulbs and ballasts.

Those dumpsters, which will be monitored, will be at the Boykin/Damascus site, Pea Ridge Road site, Jack Springs Road site and the Flomaton Fire Station.

Brewton/E. Brewton

The city of Brewton will have dumpsters in each district Saturday, April 20, for Brewton residents only to get rid of debris and trash. The dumpsters will be located at the old Walmart shopping center behind Farmer's Furniture; Highway 41 and H.K. Matthews Drive; J.L. Fisher Center; the corner of East Jackson Street and Sowell Road; and at the entrance to the E.O. Wilson Nature Adventure Park behind Arby's.

Appliances may be taken to the Jay Road Landfill from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 20. Electronics can be taken to the public works department next to the Brewton Fire Station.

Auto Zone and O'Reilly Auto Parts will also be taking batteries and oil, while tires can be taken to the public works dumpster on St. Nicholas Avenue with a limit of four tires.

The city of East Brewton's trash truck will be available to pick up trash Saturday. To arrange a trash pickup, call 251-867-7998.

Poarch

Poarch will hold its collection day from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, April 27 at the Poarch Creek Fire Station No. 1, located at 5811 Jack Springs Road. The event is open to all residents of Poarch and the surrounding area.

The collection is for households only, no businesses, and is free of charge.
