Turtle Point to hold open house Saturday

This Saturday, April 6, Turtle Environmental Science Center in Flomaton will host its Spring Open House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. There will a couple of presentations, including Jimmy Stiles, who will be there with a Reptile Show at 10:15 to 11:15 and will feature live reptiles. Turtle Point Director Sierra Stiles said this is the busy time of year, getting habitats cleaned and ready for spring events. Stiles said events like this introduce people to animals and give them a chance to learn and understand animals better. Stiles said she enjoys working with students and seeing them learn to respect and interact with animals in a way they may not have before. "We will have butterflies in the Butterfly House for the weekend event," said Stiles. "The boardwalk will be open to hike out to the wetland overlook and the creek overlook." Vicky Smith, with A to Z Animals will present a bat show, with live bats and many taxidermied bats from 12:15 to 1:15. Lunch will be available on site for sale. "It should be a beautiful day to be outside and hike the boardwalk," said Stiles. "We will have all of our live animal room open for people to look at all the aquatic animals, the turtle and fish. It should be a great family event." Stiles said another fun event is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 that will include a stained glass artist and a mosaic tile workshop that offers visitors a chance to participate and be creative.
