Fire at CACC-owned house investigated

A 'suspicious' fire destroyed a building Tuesday night owned by Coastal Alabama Community College in Brewton, that was used for storage, remains under investigation by the Brewton Police Department and the state Fire Marshal's Office.

The house, located at 117 College St., next to the college's campus, was used to house old documents and records.

Brewton Fire Chief Jeff Salter said the first call came in about 10 p.m. Tuesday. Salter noted the building did not have any electrical or gas service. He added a police officer was the first to arrive and reported there was a window broken out on the backside of the house.

He said when firemen arrived there was a lot of smoke and the fire had vented out the back of the house.

Salter said firemen were able to put the fire out and left the scene about 1 a.m. However, about 4 a.m. the fire reignited and firemen responded again and put the fire out.

Salter called the fire 'suspicious' and has asked the state Fire Marshal's Office to investigate and determine the cause.

Anyone with information concerning the fire is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.
