Sex offender jailed after violating law

Used library's WiFi to watch porn on tablet

A convicted sex offender who had registered his home address in Flomaton was arrested for violating Alabama's Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act after officials determined he was living in Century.

Darrell Anthony Smith, 51, whose address was listed at 4247 Old Atmore Road, was arrested last week and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton and jailed on $50,000 bond.

Flomaton police originally confronted Smith when Smith used an extension cord to hook up to power at the Flomaton Library to run electronic devices.

Police Chief Dane NeSmith said Smith admitted to using the library's WiFi to watch pornography.

Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Inv. Bruce Shue was contacted. Shue determined Smith had not been living at the Flomaton address as required by law. Smith had registered with the sheriff's office in May and listed his address on Old Atmore Road. The law requires sex offenders to notify the sheriff's office if they change addresses.

Smith was contacted by telephone and asked to come to the 4247 Old Atmore Road, where he was arrested.

Court records show Smith was convicted of four counts voyeurism surveillance for videoing people without their knowledge in Harrison County, Miss. Records also show Smith spent time with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
