Woman is hit, killed in Atmore

Martin struck by vehicle crossing Highway 31 and man driving vehicle critical after attack

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Atmore Police Department are investigating a Saturday night incident in Atmore where a woman was struck by a vehicle and killed and the person who is accused of running over her was beaten and later transported by helicopter to a trauma center.

According to reports from the Atmore Police Department, about 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 5 were dispatched to the Tavern, located at 5440 Highway 31 in reference to a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived the found Hannah Martin, 24, of Poarch with severe injuries and began CPR. Martin was transported to Atmore Community Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Martin had parked across Highway 31 and was walking toward the Tavern when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Kenneth Harrison, 45, of Silverhill.

Harrison exited his vehicle after the incident and was apparently attacked by unknown people in the Tavern parking lot. Police found Martin with severe injuries and he was transported a trauma center in critical condition.

ALEA state troopers are investigating the incident that caused the death of Martin. The Atmore Police Department investigators are investigating the circumstances surrounding Harrison's assault.

Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said Wednesday investigators are still gathering evidence in the attack on Harrison and as of press time Wednesday, no arrests had been made.
