Son had previously been arrested for beating father with a shovel

A 41-year old man who was arrested in July, 2020, on domestic violence charges for assaulting his father remains in Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola after he allegedly attacked his father again last Wednesday afternoon and the father shot him multiple times.

Adam Bryan Terry was transported by helicopter last Wednesday after being shot by his father, Richard Terry, shot his son outside Richard Terry’s home on Old Highway 31 west of Pollard.

Police and emergency responders were dispatched to the 900 block of Old Highway 31 shortly after 3 p.m. on July 26.

Officials found Adam Terry suffering from gunshot wounds and Richard Terry suffering from lacerations to his head.

Officials said the father and son got into an argument in Richard Terry’s front yard and Adam Terry hit his his father in the head with a pistol. Adam Terry allegedly then pointed the handgun at his father’s head and pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired. Richard Terry then pulled his gun and shot his son multiple times.

Richard Terry was transported by a private vehicle to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton and treated for the cuts on his head. Adam Terry was transported to Sacred Heart.

As of press time Wednesday, no charges had been filed and there was no update on Adam Terry’s condition.

District Attorney Steve Billy said Adam Terry was on probation on domestic violence charges against his father at the time of last week’s incident. Billy also noted Adam Terry was forbidden to have a weapon due to his previous domestic violence conviction. Billy added the case would be presented to a grand jury and also noted Adam Terry could be facing a violation of probation charge as well as possessing a weapon charge.

Court records show that Adam Terry was arrested in July, 2020, on felony assault II charges for knocking his father to the ground with a wooden shovel handle and then striking his father again.

Adam Terry pleaded guilty in March, 2022, to a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence III. He was sentenced to 12 months in the county jail. The sentence was suspended and Adam Terry was placed on 24 months of unsupervised probation. Adam Terry was also ordered for a mental health evaluation and to continue mental health treatment following his guilty plea.
