Second victim hit on Hwy. 29 in Century dies

Mathis dies from injuries sustained when hit on July 6

The second victim who was hospitalized after being hit by vehicles July 6 crossing Highway 29 in Century died last Wednesday at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Jessica Ann Mathis, 34, of Brewton died from the injuries she received that night. Jenny Lum Ackerman, 53, also of Brewton died the night of the incident.

The two women were leaving Vallarta Mexican Grill about 8:30 p.m. on July 6 when they attempted to cross the highway.

Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol said Mathis was struck by a vehicle headed south driven by someone only identified as a 36-year old from Flat Rock, Ala. Ackerman then entered the southbound lane to help Mathis and was struck by an SUV also traveling in the southbound lane. The driver of the second vehicle was only identified as a 71-year old Brewton resident.

A memorial service for Mathis was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Faith Church in East Brewton with Pastor Steve Massingill officiating and Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Mathis is survived by her father Tommy Mathis of Clermont, Fla.; three children, Ayden Mitchell, Arianna Mathis and Julie Davidson; four brothers, Jason Mathis of Milton, Jeremy Mathis of Southport, Fla., Eric Mathis of Brooksville, Fla., and Luke Mathis of Clermont, Fla; and one sister, Brandi Holt of Dothan, Ala.
