One dead, one injured at Atmore event

Block party turns deadly early Monday morning as gunshots ring out killing one; police are seeking witnesses

One person is dead, another is hospitalized and the Atmore Police Department is seeking the suspect or suspects in an early-morning shooting Monday.

According to Atmore police reports, officers responded to the area of Carver Avenue and King Street about 2:15 a.m. in reference to a shots fired complaint.

When officers arrived they reported that two people had been shot. Both victims were transported to Atmore Community Hospital where Robert Starks of Atmore was pronounced dead. The other victim was transported to a trauma center and an update on his condition was not available at press time.

Police noted the shooting happened during a block party and police have interviewed witnesses and are seeking other witnesses.

Police Chief Chuck Brooks said the police department has suspects but is continuing its investigation and added he does expect an arrest.
