Miller jailed for killing brother, beating father

On probation for attempted murder at time

An Evergreen man who was on probation for attempted murder is back behind bars on murder and assault charges after being arrested for shooting and killing his brother and beating his father.

Shawn Jerome Miller, 42, 40 Camilia Lane, was jailed without bond following the incident Saturday night. Miller was scheduled to appear again before District Judge Eric Coale yesterday (Wednesday) for an Aniah's Law hearing to see if he will remain in jail with no bond or is entitled to a bond.

Events began earlier Saturday when Miller's mother Linda Kay Miller died. Shawn Miller showed up at his brother Benjamin Scott Miller's house on Old Foshee Road about 5 p.m.

He is then accused of shooting and killing Benjamin Miller and severely beating their father Donnie Miller, Sr. with his fist and a handgun. Donnie Miller was transported to a Birmingham in critical condition. An update on his condition was not available as of press time Wednesday.

During a bond hearing Monday, District Attorney Steve Billy, citing Miller's violent past, asked Judge Coale to hold Miller without bond. Judge Coale agreed and set the Aniah's Law hearing for May 17. Billy also noted that witnesses said Miller had called his brother's house prior to arriving Saturday evening saying he was coming to kill him.

Miller was arrested in December, 2021 on multiple charges that included attempted murder after he was accused to shooting toward Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office deputies.

Law enforcement first responded to the 1700 block of Highway 41 in Brewton in reference of a vehicle that had run into a house.

Court records said Miller, who was driving the vehicle, fled into a wooded area. When deputies arrived, Miller is accused of firing shots from a handgun in the direction of the deputies. He is also accused of firing more shots once inside the woods. Records also note Miller was out on bond for assault at the time of the 2021 incident.

In that incident, Miller was charged with attempted murder, public intoxication, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Billy stated Miller pleaded guilty to the attempted murder charge in that case.
