Jan. 2 is deadline for property taxes

Penalties and interest will begin on Jan. 3

Due to Dec. 31 falling on a Saturday and Monday, Jan. 2 being observed at the New Year's holiday, Tuesday, Jan. 3, is the deadline to pay property taxes in Escambia County (Ala.) to avoid penalties and interest.

Tax Collector Tim Pettis said as of Tuesday, about $11.4 million in ad valorem taxes of the $19.5 billed had been collected. He noted his office had a lot of mail to process Tuesday and also noted some of the biggest accounts normally come in on the last day.

"We're about on track of what we've been doing," Pettis said. "A lot of people wait until the last minute to pay their property taxes."

Anyone mailing in their property taxes must have those payments postmarked on or before Jan. 3.

Taxes not paid by the deadline can still be paid with a penalty. Pettis said he plans to hold the delinquent tax sale in April.
