From TV to jail for area moonshiner

Flomaton resident, TV star arrested for his still

Flomaton resident Johnny Wayne Griffis, who competed in the Discovery Channel's 'Moonshiners Master Distiller' and the new 'The Country Networks' television series 'Alabama Shine' has been arrested and charged with possession of a still and possession of prohibited beverages.

Griffis, 48, 394 Community Church Road, was arrested Monday by agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. He was released from the Escambia County Detention Center Tuesday on $3,000 bond.

According to court records on Monday, Sept. 12 Griffis was found in possession of a working moonshine still, which was in the process of cooking a run of moonshine when ALEA officers arrived with a search warrant.

Records also state that Griffis was in possession of 19 quarts of flavored moonshine and 5 gallons of clear moonshine.

He was taken into custody by ALEA officers and transported to the detention center in Brewton. Circuit Judge Jeff White set the $3,000 secured bond Tuesday afternoon.
