Flomaton committee OKs zoning change

A public hearing is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday

In its first action since the Flomaton Town Council approved the town’s land use and development code, the town’s planning commission approved a zoning change from residential to commercial on a piece of property owned by First Baptist Church.

During the planning commission meeting Monday afternoon, Daniel Moore, representing the church, told the committee the church was requesting to rezone a lot just north of 601 Palafox Street as commercial to construct a pole barn.

He said the pole barn is needed to store the church’s outreach trailers to keep them out of weather. The lot is located behind the church and is connected to the commercial lots owned by the church.

The church is also requesting the town remove the curbing on Palafox Street to create a drive to the pole barn.

The planning commission voted unanimously to approve the zoning change. A public hearing will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22 at town hall for the public to voice opinions in favor of or against the zoning change. The town council will meet at 4 p.m. that same Monday to vote on whether or not to approve the change.
