Parvovirus prompts city to euthanize 20-plus dogs and shelter shut down for two weeks and cleaning begins
The Brewton Animal Shelter was shut down last week for a major cleaning following an outbreak of parvovirus that forced city employees to euthanize more than 20 dogs last Wednesday.
The facility was closed last Tuesday and is expected to be closed for two weeks while the facility is completely sanitized.
Mayor Yank Lovelace said all animals inside the shelter had to be euthanized.
“It’s an unfortunate thing to have to do,” Lovelace said. “When we pick up a dog we don’t know if they have parvo or not.”
