Britt storms through Escambia, state to win GOP nod

Larry White took one step closer to regaining his District 3 seat on the Escambia County (Ala.) Commission by defeating incumbent Commissioner Scottie Stewart 642 to 607 in Tuesday’s Republican Primary.

White faces no Democratic opposition in the November General Election.

“It’s a great honor to win the Republican nomination,” White said. “I thank my family and many supporters for their confidence in me.”

“Hopefully after the General Election I will return to the county commission,” White said. “I will continue to work for what I perceive to be in the best interest of the residents of District 3 and the entire county.”

White and Stewart were forced into a runoff following the May 24 Primary. In May, Stewart led the ticket with 597 votes to White’s 557. Bill Blair finished third with 371 votes, giving Stewart a 40-vote lead over White.

Numbers flipped Tuesday with White securing the 35-vote victory.

Unofficial returns showed an 11.87 percent voter turnout Tuesday in Escambia County. In the May primary for the District 3 seat, 1,525 votes were cast and Tuesday 1,249 votes were cast showing that 276 people who voted in May did not vote Tuesday in the commission race.

Across Escambia County, 3,148 votes were cast Tuesday – 2,933 Republican ballots and 215 Democratic ballots.

In the only Democratic race on the county ballot, Yolanda Rochelle Flowers received 118 votes to Malika Sanders Fortier’s 97 to win the nomination for governor. Statewide, Flowers won the Democratic nomination with 32,416 votes to Fortier’s 26,363. Flowers will now face Republican Kay Ivey in the November General Election to elect the state’s next governor.

Escambia County followed the state trend by giving its support to Katie Britt for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate. In Escambia County, Britt received 2,297 votes or 79.10 percent to Mo Brooks 607 votes. Britt also won statewide with 63.01 percent by receiving 252,877 votes to Brooks’ 148,420.

Jim Zeigler won Escambia County with 1,380 votes to Wes Allen’s 1,353 votes for secretary of state, however, Allen won the Republican nomination with a 247,805 to 131,199 victory over Zeigler.

Andrew Sorell won the Republican nomination for state auditor with a 204,973 to 151,779 win over Stan Cooke. In Escambia County, Sorrell received 1,270 votes to Cooke’s 1,236.

Jeremy H. Oden received the Republican nomination for Place 1 on the Public Service Commission with a 175,601 to 160,011 victory over Brent Woodall. In Escambia County Woodall received 1,210 votes to Oden’s 1,112.

Chip Beeker won the GOP nomination for the Place 2 seat on the Public Service Commission with a 215,095 to 124,959 victory over Robert L. McCollum. In Escambia County Beeker received 1,324 votes to McCollum’s 1,010.
