Metal pipe attack leads to arrest

Johnson now facing manslaughter charges

A Century man is in jail facing felony manslaughter charges after an altercation involving a metal pipe led to death of the victim 10 days later.

Timothy Lavon Johnson, 34, 77 Martin Luther King Drive, was arrested Feb. 18 and charged with the homicide of another Century man following an altercation between the two in July of 2021, which led to the unnamed man's death on July 28, 2021, according to an Escambia County Sheriff's Office report.

The report said officers responded to a battery call at 135 Hilltop Road in Century July 18, 2021. When officers arrived, they made contact with a witness and observed the unnamed victim to be bloody and beaten. The witness said the victim had been crawling around on the ground prior to being taken to the hospital by ambulance. Other witnesses on the scene were interviewed, but could not provide much more information.

Another witness who was at the scene was interviewed Aug. 3 and told officers that he and some friends, including the victim, were hanging out in the yard on the night the victim was injured. The witness said he decided to go inside to watch a basketball game on TV about 9 p.m., leaving the victim in the yard with Johnson and one other person, the report said.

On Aug. 5, another witness who was at the scene interviewed by officers told them he had been friends with the victim for years and that about three days after the victim was injured, Johnson came to his house and the two talked in the witness' shed for about 5 minutes. The witness told officers Johnson admitted to him that he hit had the victim and the victim was injured badly, according to the report.

In a heavily redacted interview with Johnson Aug. 6, the report said Johnson told the interviewing officer he was not injured in the altercation.

A warrant was issued for Johnson's arrest. He was arrested Feb. 18 and is in the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola. His bond was set at $500,000.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office refused to release the victim's name.
