Taxes due Monday

Deadline extended to Jan. 3 in Escambia

With the deadline to file property taxes looming, Escambia County (Ala.) Tax Collector Tim Pettis said as of Wednesday morning his office has collected about 60 percent of taxes that are due.

Property taxes are traditionally due by Dec. 31 but due to New Year's Eve falling on Dec. 31 the deadline has been extended to Monday, Jan. 3.

“I expect a huge increase these next few days,” Pettis said of taxes collected. “A lot of people wait until the last minute to pay their taxes.”

Taxes not paid by Jan. 3 will be assessed a 3 percent penalty and a $5 fee. Tax payments mailed in must be postmarked on or before Jan. 3 to avoid penalties and fees.

The tax collectors offices in Brewton and Atmore will be open Thursday and Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 31.

Pettis said fees will go up on March 1 and then those parcels will be put up for sale at the annual delinquent tax sale, which will be held in May.
