Atmore man jailed for rape and incest

Shavers accused of having sex with with underage girl; is jailed on $250,000 bond

An Atmore man is being held on $250,000 bond on charges of rape II and incest for having sex with an underage girl and the charges could be upgraded to rape I.

William Earl Shavers, 53, 102 White St., Atmore, is accused of having intercourse with a girl less than 16 but more than 12 between Jan. 1, 2017 and Dec. 23, 2019.

During a bond hearing Monday, Assistant District Attorney Kim Pettis told District Judge Eric Coale that she expects the rape II charge to be upgraded to rape I and asked for a $250,000 bond.

When Judge Coale asked Shavers if he understood the charges against him, Shavers said he did not. When the judge read the charges, Shavers appeared shocked.

Pettis also told Judge Coale that Shavers was a truck driver and has the ability to flee. She also asked if Shavers is released on bond that he wear an ankle monitor and have no contact with with the alleged victim or any child under the age of 18. She also requested he be placed on house arrest.

Judge Coale set the bond at $250,000 and included the restrictions requested by Pettis.

When Judge Coale asked Shavers if he would like to hire an attorney or have one appointed, Shavers said he would hire his own attorney.
