Boo joins Flomaton PD as newest officer

Drug and tracking dog purchased for town

The Flomaton Police Department has added new officer to its force who will be used to detect drugs and track criminals and missing persons. His name is Boo and is a 5-year old female German Shepherd.

Police Chief Chance Thompson said Boo has previously worked in law enforcement and his owner was getting out of law enforcement and decided to sell the dog.

"It was a perfect opportunity at the right time," Thompson said.

Thompson said the dog was purchased with money donated to a fund he created about a year ago at town hall for people to help purchase a dog at no cost to the town. Thompson said the money in the fund was used to purchase the dog and will provide training and equipment. He said he's currently seeking grants for a cooling system that will be used in the K-9 vehicle.

Thompson said Boo is nationally certified in drug detection and tracking and has won awards in various competitions. She has worked as police dog for the past two to three years.

"This is the happiest I've been as police chief in a long time," Thompson said.

He thanked people in the community who donated to the fund saying Boo will be a great addition to the police department and the community.

The dog was purchased Tuesday and is currently working with her new K-9 handler and is being housed in a kennel and will soon be ready for active duty.

"Her primary duties will be drug detection and tracking," Thompson said.
