Woman trapped in burning home dies

A 70-year old Brewton area woman died Friday night when the wheelchair-bound woman was trapped inside her burning home on Jernigan Road, near McCall.

Phala Partin Hay, 266 Jernigan Road, was found inside the home by first responders, according to McCall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles Jackson.

Jackson said Brewton Police Officer Tyler Aaron discovered the home fully involved and called at 9:53 p.m. Jackson also said he received a call of the house fully involved in flames with someone trapped inside.

Jackson said Officer Aaron and a neighbor tried to enter the home, but were unsuccessful.

Firefighters from McCall were on the scene within a few minutes and firefighters from Friendship, Brewton and Pineview responded.

Jackson said when he arrived on the scene he was told a handicapped woman in a wheelchair was inside the house.

He said Hay's body was found in the kitchen area of the home. He also said a state fire marshal arrived and by 5:40 a.m. Saturday had tentatively determined the fire was apparently started by an electrical issue on the back porch.
