Brewton cancels Christmas parade

Atmore, Jay still on go for annual parades

As of Wednesday, Atmore and Jay are still on go for their annual Christmas parades with Brewton announcing this week that its Dec. 11 parade has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Brewton joins Flomaton, Century and Barnett Crossroads in cancelling Christmas parades due to COVID-19 related issues.

Jay will kickoff the area's parades this Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. and Atmore will hold its Twilight Christmas Parade, 'Songs of Christmas' at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 12. The Atmore parade will begin at city hall and end at Escambia County High School. The deadline to enter the Atmore parade has been extended until this Friday. Applications are available at the chamber of commerce office at 137 North Main St. For more information, call 251-368-3305. There is a $25 registration fee to enter the parade.

Brewton

Debbie Pugh, administrative assistant for the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce, said the decision to cancel Brewton's parade was based on an upswing of COVID-19 cases in the area and a steep decline in participants.

She said it was not an easy decision, but the chamber relied on information received from health care officials and guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control.

Flomaton

Although Flomaton has canceled its parade, the chamber of commerce is sponsoring a home and business Christmas decorating contest.

The contest will be limited to the Flomaton police jurisdiction and there is no entry fee. Those individuals and businesses wanting to participate must register by 4 p.m. Dec. 18. The winner in each category will receive $100 and the runner-up will receive $50.
