Campbell resigns, pleads not guilty

Flomaton head baseball coach and driver's education teacher Coy Campbell has resigned his teaching position and filed a written not guilty plea to nine felony charges accusing him of stealing money and forging receipts while employed at W.S. Neal High School.

Campbell, 50, entered the not guilty plea with the Escambia County Circuit Clerk's Office and also waived his right to have an arraignment. He had previously resigned from his position with the Escambia County School System, effective Aug. 21.

At the last Escambia County School Board meeting, the board approved Campbells' resignation.

An Escambia County grand jury indicted Campbell on seven counts of forgery, one count of theft of property III and one count of using his position for personal gain.

Campbell turned himself in at the Escambia County Detention Center and was released on $25,000 bond.

The forgery charges are Class C felonies, the theft of property is a Class D felony and the use of his position for personal gain is a Class B felony and an ethics violation.
