Murder charged in shooting

Evans jailed on $300,000 bond in death

An investigation into the May 9 shooting death of Tyler Dawayne Lisenby, 22, led to the arrest Friday of Rufus Evans III on murder charges.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said deputies were dispatched on May 9 to 3660 William Cook Road in the Damascus community in reference to an unknown disturbance. When deputies arrived they discovered Lisenby's body, with a gunshot wound, on the front porch of the residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evans, 54, 3660 William Cook Road was charged with one count of murder. District Judge Eric Coale set Evans' bond at $300,000. He remained in the Escambia County Detention Center as of press time Wednesday.

According to the arrest warrant, Evans is accused of shooting and killing Lisenby with a .9-millimeter gun.

During the bond hearing, Assistant District Attorney Todd Stearns told Judge Coale there appeared to be some altering of evidence at the scene. He also said Evans is facing a possible prison term of life if he's convicted.

Stearns also told the judge deputies had searched for Evans for three days but he was not located.

Evans told the judge he was not trying to avoid law enforcement, noting he had changed telephones and the deputies happened to come by his house when he was not home.

Should Evans be released on bond, Judge Coale told him he is to have no contact with the victim's family.

Lisenby was a life-long resident of Brewton.

A graveside service was held Sunday, May 17 at Weaver Cemetery in Appleton with Pastor Byrnes Pitts officiating.

Lisenby is survived by his mother, Melissa Kelley of Evergreen; one brother, Gordon Kyle Lisenby of Evergreen; and his grandmother, Brenda Labrell of Evergreen.
