Century to create percussion park

Town also eyeing a cell tower agreement

The Century Town Council approved a grant Monday that will fund the installation of various percussion instruments at a park in the town and allows access for everyone.

The grant, estimated at $25,000, will come from Sunday's Child through Keep Pensacola Beautiful. Known as Harmony Park, the instruments do not require electricity and allow access for everyone.

The town will be responsible for pouring concrete for the installation, estimated at $1,500, assisting with unloading the equipment and maintaining the equipment once it is installed.

Sunday's Child did request that the park be in a place where there is no playground equipment already there.

Century City Manager Vernon Prather said the instruments can be installed at different heights and they are sturdy enough to withstand the elements.

“They are tuned instruments,” said Prather. “These are high-end instruments, well-made, and can be played by children all the way up to adults.”

The council voted unanimously to approve the grant. The location for the park was not determined and the council agreed to determine a location at a future meeting.

In other business, the council discussed the installation of a 300-foot cell tower that could generate $1,500 a month for the town with no cost to the town to install or maintain the tower.

Diamond Towers sent a proposed lease agreement that would generate at least $1,500 every month for rent with a 2 percent increase every five years.

The self-supporting tower that does not require guide wires would be placed in a 80' x 80'-square-foot area at the town's maintenance yard on Alger Road in a ground lease agreement.

Town Attorney Matt Dannheiser will review the document from the company's attorney to make sure the town is represented and protected before entering into the agreement.

Town planner Debbie Nickles agreed to research current zoning and other policies to ensure all legal and state guidelines are met.

The proposal will be presented to the council for final approval at a later date.

The town of Century will hold a budget workshop at 7 p.m., Monday, April 11, in a telephone conference. To join, dial 712-770-5079 and dial the access code 227646#.
