Locals place at Polar Bear Swim Fest

Nine teams, including The Brewton Local Area Swim Team (B.L.A.S.T. Tigersharks) recently competed in the PNY Polar Bear Swim Fest, February 1-2, held at the Bodenheimer Recreational Center in Gulf Shores. The BLAST Tigersharks took the 3rd place trophy for overall points scored at the meet, with the second smallest team in numbers representing their respective clubs in attendance.

The teams competing were: the Southern Waters Aquatic Team (SWAT); City of Mobile Swim Assoc. (CMSA); Gulf Shores Swim Team (GSST); Holley-By-The-Sea (HBTS); Pensacola Navy Youth (PNY); Covington Aquatics (CAST); Brewton Local Area Swim Team (BLAST); Seastars Swim Team (SST) and the Wiregrass Aquatics Club (WAC).

The Tigershark Swimmers in attendance were Nolan Atkinson, Mac Baxter, Baines Duncan, Cole Jernigan, Callie Kent, Caleb Kent, Matthew Kirkland, Sarah Paige Schultz and Jordan Simmons.

The Brewton swimmers competed in the meet with each swimming up to five events and relays over the two- day competition.

Jordan Simmons, son of Greg and Stacey Simmons, took the High Point award for his age group, scoring 52 individual points in the age 8 and under division and taking 5th in 25 backstroke, 2nd in the 50 Free, 25 in the breaststroke and 50 in the fly on Saturday. Simmons then won all 5 races on Sunday, the 25 free, 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 25 fly and the 100 yard freestyle event.

Callie Kent, daughter of Danny and Phyllis Kent, took the High Point Award for her 11-12 year-old girls age-group, scoring 55 individual points. Kent took 2nd overall in the Mixed 11-12 500 freestyle and the 11-12 Girls 100yd IM, along with a 5th place finish in the 50 breaststroke and a 1st place in 12u girls 500 free on Saturday. On Sunday, Kent placed 3rd in both the 50 and 200 freestyle, 2nd in the 100yd backstroke and winning the 11-12 year-olds 50 fly.

The mens 200 freestyle relay and 200 Medley Relay both took 1st place overall, scoring 14 points per relay for our club.

The relay winning swimmers are Cole Jernigan, Mac Baxter, Baines Duncan and Nolan Atkinson.
