Van Roosevelt Smith

Van Roosevelt Smith, 62, of Atmore, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, at SAAD Hospice in Mobile.

Mr. Smith was a native of Greenville, Ala. who grew up in Brewton and graduated from Southern Normal School in 1975. Attending Kentucky State University and Auburn University, he received his bachelor of science in education. He worked for more than 30 years as a teacher and coach at Southern Normal, Baldwin County, Georgiana and J.F. Shields Schools and Reid State Technical College in Evergreen and Jeff Davis (now Coastal Alabama Community College) in Brewton. A member of Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church, he worked at Wind Creek casino for nine years.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, at Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church with Pastor Edgar McCarthy officiating. Burial followed at Pierce Rabb and Montgomery Cemetery with Turner Funeral Chapel directing.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Wilma Quarker Smith of Atmore; two daughters, Teresa Quarker Smith and Carlie Quarker Smith, both of Atmore; three brothers, Earnest Jack (Doris) Smith, William Roy (Gwen) Smith and James “Book” (Renee) Smith, all of Frankfort, Ky.; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and other family members.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clara Smith.
