Council OKs garbage contract

The town of Flomaton's residential garbage collection will switch from Republic Services to Waste Pro following a recent bid opening that leaves the garbage rates the same with no increases for two years.

The council approved the resolution to award the contract to Waste Pro until Nov. 30, 2022. The new contract begins on Dec. 1.

Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye said Waste Pro will also begin picking up commercial garbage for those that use the standard cans like residences' and that service will be billed through the town.

The council passed an ordinance that sets residential garbage rates at $17.38 per month for one can, $26.65 for two cans and $32.86 for three cans.

With the elimination of the $5 a month fee for access to curbside debris pickup, the town will begin charging for that service on a call basis. The curbside pickup is for residences only.

Residents will need to call town hall at 296-2431 to schedule a pickup. Piles up to 6 feet long, 6 feet high and 4 feet deep will cost $15 to be picked up. Piles larger than that will be $25. Those charges will be added to the residents' next utility bill.

The council also voted to do away with the free use of the dumpster behind town hall. The dumpster will be available to Flomaton residents only and no commercial businesses.

A minimum charge of $2 will be made for trash up to 3 feet in length, 3 feet wide and 1 foot deep. A pickup truck load will cost $5 and a trailer load will be $10.

The dumpster will be available to residents from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Residents must first go to town hall, show proof of residency, fill out a dumpster use form and pay the fee. Residents will then be given a key to unlock the gate on the fence around the dumpster.

Vote delayed

An ordinance to set water and sewer rates but also include an annual 3 percent increase to cover inflation failed to receive unanimous support Monday night and will have to come back for a second reading at the next council meeting.

Councilman Buster Crapps cast the lone vote against the ordinance, specifically the automatic 3 percent increase.
