Traffic stop in Jay nets meth, marijuana

A traffic stop August 31 resulted in a Jay man facing one count felony marijuana possession and other charges.

Dexter Darrell Biggs, 42, 4529 Darney Road, was the passenger in a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Koree Harrington when they were pulled over by law enforcement for failure to maintain a single lane and a busted driver's side tail light in Jay, according to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office report.

When the officer made contact with Harrington, both she and the passenger, identified as Biggs, provided their driver's licenses and insurance, the report said.

The report said the officer smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Harrington to exit the vehicle and step back to in front of his car. When he advised Harrington of the strong smell, she advised she did not have any marijuana or any other drug inside the vehicle or on her, the report said.

Harrington gave the officer permission to search the vehicle and her and that when she and Biggs got into the vehicle, she told Biggs it smelled like burned marijuana and asked of Dexter had anything on him to which he replied no, according to the report.

When the officer asked Biggs to exit the vehicle, the officer observed a glass smoking pipe in a plastic cellophane baggie sitting on the seat. The report said the officer noticed also in the seat was a plastic cellophane baggie containing a green, leafy substance identified as marijuana.

A second clear plastic bag with a green leafy substance was found tucked in between the seat cushion and the plastic portion of the seat, the report said. Biggs was placed in double locked handcuffs, the report said.

A further search revealed a small plastic container in between the center console and passenger seat containing a clear crystalline substance inside which tested positive for crystal methamphetamine, the report noted.

Harrington advised the officer she did not have any knowledge of the marijuana or meth inside the vehicle. She said when she started driving the truck, she noticed it smelled like burnt marijuana and that she knew better than to ride around Jay with any type of drugs at 1 a.m., according to the report.

Biggs was arrested and charged with one count felony possession of a controlled substance without prescription, one count of possession of marijuana under 20 grams and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and given a bond of $6,000.
