Police investigate death

The Atmore Police Department is investigating the death of an 84-year old man as a homicide after his body was discovered inside his home July 26 with an apparent gunshot wound.

Atmore police were dispatched after receiving a call from 425 Jacksprings Road at 11:06 a.m. in reference to a dead person and discovered the body of Willie Ankum. Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said the call to report the death came from Ankum's son.

In reports released by the police department, it stated that injuries to Ankum were consistent with a gunshot wound. Investigators responded and secured the scene for evidence collection and Ankum's body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. Brooks did say it appeared Ankum had been dead for eight to 10 hours before he was discovered.

Brooks said the case will proceed as a homicide investigation and will remain open pending the autopsy results.

Atmore police is asking if anyone has any information regarding the death of Ankum to call the Atmore Police Department at 251-368-9141 or their nearest law enforcement agency.
