Write what you think you know?

Write what you know. A long time ago my Mama told me to do that. Fast forward a few years, and my husband told me the same thing. Write what you know. Its simple words, but how do you write when you realize that you don’t know anything. Well, here’s what I know.

Our country has changed.

For the better or worse remains to be seen, but it has changed. Whether or not you voted for him, President Trump has changed our country. There is an underlining current that is gaining momentum and truth be told, it scares me. There is a brashness in our country now. An unapologetic attitude that has taken control. See, we’ve had that attitude before, and maybe that is what captured the nation’s idealism, but maybe just maybe, we’ve taken it too far.

We like to stomp around with our heads held high telling everyone that “We are Americans.” Lord knows the rest of the world tolerates our God given sense of entitlement. But do we really deserve it?

Are we OK with telling women what they can and can’t do with their bodies? Will we demand that men get vasectomies next?

People spout off about being politically correct, but honestly is that a bad thing? Why shouldn’t we care about offending others? Weren’t we all told as children “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

We aren’t leading the world any more.

In Alabama there are reports that claim thousands of children are currently in foster care. Unclaimed children. We’ve all heard about the unclaimed baggage sale in northern Alabama. But how have we learned to turn a blind eye to the unclaimed children.

This recent legislation put through Alabama to ban abortions is only meant to get a rise out of the United States Supreme Court, but folks, did it need to in the first place?

Now, I’m not advocating for abortion, but I’m certainly questioning why so many people feel like they should get involved with a piece of legislation that has been in the books since 1973. Haven’t we put this to bed already? And this latest hiccup will only be challenged down the road. So why do it? Abortion isn’t going anywhere. It’s just not. it will be done in closets with coat-hangers and we, as a society, will lose beautiful young girls to infections caused by medically unsupervised procedures.

It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous that we as a nation walk around claiming our superiority when in fact, India, yes India, has more progressive views on the sanctity of life.

So write what you know. If I’m honest with myself, with the way the country is going, I don’t think that I want to know.
