Help McMillan to help others

Tuesday afternoon we talked with Lisa McMillan as she sat in her chair with her apron on at Coastal Alabama Community College as people filled their bowls with soup in the Empty Bowls Soup Fundraiser that helps her do what she loves best – give back to the community.

McMillan runs Drexell & Honeybee's, a non-profit organization that has a simple goal – feeding people.

Located at 109 Lee St., in Brewton, Drexell & Honeybee's is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays for breakfast for people ages 60 and older.

The unique thing about Drexell & Honeybee's is there is no set price to eat. If you can't afford to buy a meal, it's free. It works off of donations, kind of a pay what you can situation.

For years McMillan has reached out to the Brewton community. She hosts Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, but understands that people also need to eat on other days.

What makes McMillan and Drexell & Honeybee's unique is that is not a government handout. It's people helping people. It's about a community rallying around each other to make sure people don't go hungry when they need something to eat. It's also great food.

We applaud those who attended Tuesday to buy a bowl of soup, but we encourage people to stop by Drexell & Honeybee's to eat and give what you can.

It's a wonderful ministry that touches so many people, but it will take continued support from the community to keep it going.

Thank you Lisa.
