Keep your money local

If you watch TV or surf the internet, you've seen those tear-jerking advertisements seeking donations to help save starving and cold dogs.

'For as little as $$$ a month you can help this animal find a safe home' is how most of these commercials present themselves. We're not asking you to not send money, but we are asking you to reconsider where you send your money.

Paws Crossed Dog and Rescue in Brewton is working hard to find homes for stray animals, many who look just like the ones you see on those national commercials. But if you give your money to Paws Crossed, you can be rest assured that your money is going to help save dogs and cats in your own community.

On March 2, Paws Crossed is hosting a 5-K run at O'Bannon Park in Brewton. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and will run until 10 a.m. or until the last runner crosses the finish line.

You can run by yourself or you can run or walk with your dog on a leash. We applaud the volunteers from Paws Crossed for holding this event. Too many of those commercials simply want you to send your money and you really never know where that money goes.

Don't get us wrong, Paws Crossed will also be happy to take your donation check, whether you decide to take the 5K trail, but they are asking for the community to support a worthy cause.

We're not all runners, we're not all walkers, but most decent people know animals need to be treated well.

Hopefully you and your dog will show up and show your support. If you can't make it, they still need your money to help save animals. Call Renee Johnson at 251-363-6912 and help a great organization.
