Train claims life of Atmore man

The Atmore Police Department identified the man who was struck and killed by a train last Wednesday as Eric Edwards Smith, 40, of Atmore.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Feb. 6, Atmore police responded to a call in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a train at the railroad crossing at Martin Luther King Avenue.

According to reports, when police arrived they observed Smith lying face down on the grass next to the railroad track. The body was immediately checked for vital signs, of which there were none. ASAP Ambulance crews were already on the scene and resuscitation procedures were administered but were unsuccessful. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witness statements and evidence observed at the scene, Smith was walking or standing on the track at the Martin Luther King Avenue crossing. It was also noted the crossing arms were down and signal lights were flashing and the west-bound CSX train sounded its horn numerous times but Smith did not get out the path of the oncoming train.
