W.S. Neal project underway; board OKs personnel

At the Escambia County Board of Education meeting last Friday, Superintendent John Knott gave an update on the status of the W.S. Neal High School construction project.

Knott said that Johns and Kirksey Roofing Contractor out of Tuscaloosa is working on the reroof and that all of their roofing supplies were delivered Friday and they plan to begin on the reroof on Monday, Nov. 26.

“The Phase 2 work will be completed by A.E. Newt Construction Company, out of Pensacola,” said Knott. “They are the same company that got the bid and completed the job at Flomaton for the new auditorium and the Escambia County high School auditorium.”

Knott said that those working on athletic facility and auditorium are diligently working towards completion.

“We are hopeful they will be finished by the end of the school year,” said Knott.

Flomaton Mayor Dewey Bondurant spoke to the board members about the future of Hurricane Park in Flomaton. The mayor discussed some of his developing of plans to get some support to make improvements to the facility.

“Mayor Bondurant spoke to us about some support he asked board to consider,” said Knott. “He has also spoken with Escambia County commissioners members, and has requested some support from Poarch. It's all preliminary right now.”

Knott said Bondurant wants to renovate the park's concession stands and bathroom area and add little league fields to the park.

In other business, the newly elected school board members Danny Benjamin of District 2, Mike Edwards of District 3, and Coleman Wallace of District 7 took the Oath of Office. The board members were sworn in by Judge Dave Jordan.
